Information that causes embarrassment to the subject is loshon hora, even if the words were phrased as a compliment. So if you talk about someone, make sure that he’ll be happy to hear what you said. |

We never know how information will impact other people. Words that damage, whether directly or indirectly, are loshon hora. So the best approach is simply to avoid speaking about other people’s lives. |

The rules of loshon hora are the same for one’s spouse as they are for all people. In fact, sharing negative stories and petty complaints will likely taint a relationship rather than strengthen it. |

Negative comments about a place, which don’t demean any person or group of people are not loshon hora. Still, it’s better to focus on the positive. If we do so for places and things, we’ll train ourselves to do it for people as well. |

Loshon hora is relative to whom one is speaking about. A $100 donation from such a rich man looks stingy. In this case, where remaining silent will imply something negative, give the benefit of the doubt and answer without being sarcastic. |

While it may be okay to tell a story about oneself, one may not include others in the story. They may not want others to know what happened. Including oneself in the story doesn’t help to make it okay. |

Criticizing a speaker is loshon hora. People may decide against going to hear him. It could harm his reputation and even cause financial loss. The only exception would be if the inquirer were in charge of hiring the speaker for an event. |

Saying something that is true and degrading about someone is loshon hara. You can only say it if it is to protect others from harm, and even then there are narrow guidelines. |
